George Zimmerman Charged with 2nd Degree Murder

By Dennis Loo (4/11/12) 4:39 PM PST

Special prosecutor Angela Corey announced within the hour that she is charging Trayvon Martin's killer, George Zimmerman, with second-degree murder.

It took 46 days for this to happen.

The original prosecutor, state attorney Norm Wolfinger, refused to charge Zimmerman, despite Zimmerman's confession that he shot and killed Trayvon and the fact that Travyon was engaged in nothing suspicious at the time other than walking while black. Wolfinger was asked to step aside by Governor Rick Scott after numerous marches and press conferences called on behalf of and by Trayvon's parents and in outrage at Trayvon's murder and the failure of authorities to act against his killer and after the incident became a national news story.

Let there be no mistake: Angela Corey would not have been brought in, she would not have brought charges, and Zimmerman would still be roaming free if people had not acted in very public ways to call attention to this terrible miscarriage of justice - articles that were written, marches that people called and participated in, and the coverage that resulted from those efforts.

Those public actions - such as demonstrations and articles - need to continue for there to be any chance at all for Zimmerman to be convicted.

The number of blacks vs. white in prison is extremely high. This case proves that to be true. If the shoe was on the other foot and trayvon was a little white boy and Zimmerman was a black man there is no doubt that the black man would have served life with death plenty. Black against white crimes are charged heavier than white against black. In the new Jim crow:mass incarceration in the age of colorblindness by Michelle Alexander there are many case where black are taking to jail for years on a petty crimes just for being black, yet white people like Zimmerman are being let free without even a smack on the wrist for serious crimes like murder. Alexander never noticed the racism in the justice system until she had to deal with many cases and seen many signs. the justice system is not color blind it just chooses to side with the palest color of them all. the white man.

Zimmerman's confession should be enough for him to be prosecuted. The system is so corrupted that even when people protest justice doesn't come to fruition.
